Jesus in Christianity and Islam: Rowan Williams and Paul Williams

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ,

A few days ago our esteemed Br. Paul Bilal Williams and Lord Rowan Williams had a discussion (I must emphasize that this was not a debate) on the topic of Jesus in Islam and Christianity. The intention of the discussion was to unite Muslims and Christians on a common, positive and good understanding of Jesus the Christ. Worth the watch simply because of the two names involved!

St. Thomas Aquinas and Islamic Influence

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ,

There is no doubt that the greatest Philosopher and Theologian to come out of the Christian faith is none other than Thomas Aquinas, more commonly known as Saint Thomas Aquinas. His book, Summa Theologica has had a significant, positive impact on the development, teaching and continued persistence of Christian teachings since the 13th century CE, well into our times. Yet, what most Christians who rely on the arguments and reasoning of Christianity’s biggest and best intellectual mind fail to mention is best summed in the following quote:

“Averroes’ greatest influence was as a commentator. His doctrines had a varying fortune in Christian schools. At first they secured a certain amount of adherence, then, gradually, their incompatibility with Christian teaching became apparent, and finally, owing to the revolt of the Renaissance from everything Scholastic, they secured once more a temporary hearing. His commentaries, however, had immediate and lasting success. St. Thomas Aquinas used the “Grand Commentary” of Averroes as his model, being, apparently, the first Scholastic to adopt that style of exposition; and though he refuted the errors of Averroes, and devoted special treatises to that purpose, he always spoke of the Arabian commentator as one who had, indeed, perverted the Peripatetic tradition, but whose words, nevertheless, should be treated with respect and consideration. The same may be said of Dante’s references to him. It was after the time of St. Thomas and Dante that Averroes came to be represented as “the arch-enemy of the faith”.” – The Catholic Encyclopedia, “Averroes”.

Some through their ignorance might focus on Aquinas’ refutation of the errors of Averroes, however anyone who has actually read the works of the revered Christian saint and teacher would understand that these “refutations” were more in defense of philosophical positions and creeds which Christians held dear. It is clear that if anyone were to read Averroes’, “”Kitab al Fasl al Maqal – On the Harmony Between Religions and Philosophy”, most of Aquinas’ arguments are explicitly based on the logical positions expounded upon within. A free download of the book is available here and is essential reading for any Muslim.

Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.

A Strange Encounter

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ,

About a month ago I attended a funeral for one of my mom’s co-workers. In a hall which could hold some 300 persons, some 400 or so had chosen to say their farewell to a fairly well known Muslim woman, may Allaah grant her mercy, Ameen. As the hall became packed, I was seated in the very back, watching as things unfolded. The hall was packed, wall to wall, very little space to maneuver the throngs of people in attendance. Yet, just as fate would have it, after an opening prayer (du’a) had been made out of the corner of my eye I noticed that a Pastor had entered the room. Wearing a distinctive purple coloured shirt with a white collar. Despite having no area to sit or stand, this Pastor maneuvered his way to the back of the hall.

Discussion with a Maronite Priest: Part 2

In another discussion with the Maronite Priest and his crew, the following happened –

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree Mark 11: 12-14

“12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.”

Summary:
a) Jesus was hungry.
b) He saw a fig tree.
c) The tree was had no fruits because it was out of season.
d) Jesus got angry and cursed the tree

We asked why would Jesus curse a tree that was out of season ? Didn’t the (all knowing) Jesus know it was out of season ?

Our dear priest’s response, was that Jesus was teaching his disciples, Jesus pretended to be angry…, so that he may teach: whoever comes on Judgement day without fruits will be damned. Yet, to us even the tree should have provided fruits for Jesus the ‘god’. I responded and asked, what was the lesson behind Jesus cursing the tree ? … What lesson is to be understood : That God is to expect something from us that we don’t have the capability of achieving and when we don’t achieve it we are cursed ?

Is a farmer expected to be a rocket scientist and when he is unable to achieve this he is cursed ? Unfortunately we got the same response as before which lead to nowhere.

Discussion with a Maronite Priest: Part 1

Yesterday we had a 3 hour discussion with a Maronite priest and 2 of his companions.  After failing to deny that Jesus was a man, we asked what makes Jesus divine and the answer was: “because he performed miracles that no one else did.” At this point we were thinking “we had him cornered“, so we said: what miracles?  The reply was that he had raised the dead.

What a typical answer!

So we said, Elijah raised the dead:

Elijah raised the son of the Zarephath widow from the dead (1 Kings 17:17-22).

His “strange” reply was that the boy had been dead for few hours, the man that Jesus raised was dead for four days. To make it more strange, his companion affirmed that it is not the same kind of miracle. After a long discussion we couldn’t figure out why is it that they believed that if you raise someone who has been dead for less than four days, it doesn’t count as “raising the dead“, but if the person has been dead for four days then that makes you a God.

(thinking about this now, we should have pointed out that they believe Jesus died for three days, i.e. it doesn’t count since it’s not four days). Figuring out there is no reasoning about the “4 days” minimum requirement we pointed out that a man came alive by touching Elisha’s bones (2 Kings 13:20-21). An objective/honest observer would definitely agree that a dead man raising another dead man exceeds a living man raising a dead man, but I guess “objectivity/honesty” serve as the key words here, as we got nothing from the priest and his affirming companions that concluded that Jesus’ four days miracle was better/mightier.

Breaking News: Rapture Delayed

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ,

I found this to be quite funny, a Christian on Facebook seemed to be a bit too enthusiastic about the rapture and decided it was just about to happen, as if it were moments away. Sadly, it’s been posted since lunch time and it’s around night time now, I don’t have the heart to tell this guy that the rapture isn’t going to happen tonight. Would anyone like to do it?

Infernoz Flamz

I almost feel sort of embarrassed for the guy! Then I remembered he was a Christian and the only way he gets through life is to believe the rapture is imminently upon us. Unfortunately, most Christians who are over excessive in their excitement of the rapture fit into the mould of those who forget that no one knows when it is going to happen, not even Jesus knew. It must be depressing to wake up everyday and believe that the rapture is going to happen and going to bed knowing it hasn’t.
