A Muslim’s View on War

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ,

Note: This is intended to be a Muslim’s view on war/ terrorism/ killing infidels/ suicide bombings. These are my own views as a practicing Muslim. Both Muslims and non-Muslims alike are encouraged to share their thoughts on what I’ve written, feel free to question me, judge me, seek the truth in what I’ve said.

As a Muslim, it’s very difficult for me to articulate my emotions on such a delicate and sensitive issue. It’s not because I have something bad to say, or promote, but in today’s world a lot of focus is being put on the actions of Muslims for a myriad of reasons, whether they be socio-politically inclined or simply theologically fronted. The very first notion that a person must undertake in trying to understand the beliefs of another is to have empathy (the power of entering into another’s personality and imaginatively experiencing his feelings.). So I ask that if you’ve come here to expect some fantastical tale of me being a secret cell leader for Al Qaeda, you’re already off on the wrong foot. Today, atleast one in four people on the face of the earth are Muslim. It doesn’t necessarily mean that out of every four people, you’d find atleast one Muslim. What it does mean, is that Muslims represent one quarter of the human population on planet Earth and that by itself is no small feat. I know most people would not want to read a 5,000 page essay on this subject, so for the purpose of lessening the burden for those who seek the truth I shall do this exposition in point form:

(1) What the Qur’aan says on violence and war, the following is an excerpt from the very second Surah (Chapter of the Qur’aan):

“Fight those in the way of God who fight you, but do not be aggressive: God does not like aggressors. And fight those (who fight you) wheresoever you find them, and expel them from the place they had turned you out from. Oppression is worse than killing. Do not fight them by the Holy Mosque unless they fight you there. If they do, then slay them: Such is the requital for unbelievers. But if they desist, God is forgiving and kind. Fight them till sedition comes to end, and the law of God (prevails). If they desist, then cease to be hostile, except against those who oppress. (Fighting during) the holy month (if the sanctity) of the holy month (is violated) is (just) retribution. So if you are oppressed, oppress those who oppress you to the same degree, and fear God, and know that God is with those who are pious and follow the right path.” – Qur’aan Suratul Baqarah (2) : 190 – 194.

(2) Well, I’m sure you’ve heard about this Surah and Ayat (verse):

“But when these months, prohibited (for fighting), are over, slay the idolaters wheresoever you find them, and take them captive or besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every likely place. But if they repent and fulfil their devotional obligations and pay the zakat, then let them go their way, for God is forgiving and kind.” – Qur’aan Suratul Tawbah (9) : 5.

Seems violent, I’m sure, but why is God, telling Muslims to fight idolaters wherever we find them? As most of us have learned from Reading Comprehension (basic question and answer based on reading an excerpt) we must ask questions to derive context and understanding, so let’s see what the verses before and after it clarify for us:

“Immunity is granted those idolaters by God and His Apostle with whom you have a treaty.” – Qur’aan Suratul Tawbah (9) : 1.

The question asks itself, if this command from verse 5 applies today, what treaty from verse 1 did atheists, christians, jews or any of the disbelievers in Islam, who use this verse to say Islam is violent, sign with Muhammad {saw}? What contract did they sign? This contract that the verse refers to is called the, “Treaty of Hudaibiyah” where a peace treaty with the enemies of Islam in Makkah was signed with the Muslims.  To further give the context of verse 5, only 8 verses later we read:

“Will you not fight those who broke their pledge and plotted to banish the Apostle, and who were the first to attack you? Are you afraid of them? If you are believers you should fear God more.” – Qur’aan Suratul Tawbah (9) : 13.

(3) Let’s see what a recent European Study concluded on Islam and Terrorism, the excerpt is from this news report:

“Well, according to the EU’s 2010 Terrorism Situation and Trend Report, the total number of terrorist incidents in Europe declined in 2009. Even more important, the overwhelming majority of these incidents had nothing whatsoever to do with Islam. The report is produced by Europol, which is the criminal intelligence agency of the European Union. In 2009, there were fewer than 300 terrorist incidents in Europe, a 33 percent decline from the previous year. The vast majority of these incidents (237 out of 294) were conducted by indigenous European separatist groups, with another forty or so attributed to leftists and/or anarchists. According to the report, a grand total of one (1) attack was conducted by Islamists. Put differently, Islamist groups were responsible for a whopping 0.34 percent of all terrorist incidents in Europe in 2009. In addition, the report notes, “the number of arrests relating to Islamist terrorism (110) decreased by 41 percent compared to 2008, which continues the trend of a steady decrease since 2006.”

  • I dont think the Muslims need to take a defensive stand when it comes to the issue of terrorism / suicide bombings etc. The west is a war with Islam, since it’s the only power in the world today that is threatening their imperial objectives and the Muslims are fighting back. Media is controlled by the west and they portray facts in a way that benefits them.

  • I agree completely Mohammed. The west continuously attacks anything that might get in the way of its goals. They claim they build nations, remove evil dictators and promote democracy across the globe when actually this is all a guise to conceal their true goals: Money, power, territories, Zionism and Imperialism. This is all coming from an American born citizen of the US. I hate everything my country’s leaders are doing in the middle east. Allahu Akbar. Assalam alaykum

  • “Terrorism is nothing but privatization of war”. War is undertaken by the state whereas terrorism is undertaken by organizations. In war, mass murder is committed using most modern weaponry (This is the biggest form of state sponsored terrorism), millions of people die, millions of people will be displaced, millions of children die. In terrorism, people die in thousands; they use crude methods to kill people. Both are evil, but the larger evil is always war and western powers have a major share in it.

  • Prevailing Fragrance

War is just a war but the Islamic war or Jihad is against terrorism, not to promote it.
